Aotearoa is a set of relatively small islands at the bottom of the globe; here we are surrounded by water and vast quantities of it. One of the four elements and an essential part of human existence, water is a powerful and important signifier, playing a key role in many memories. As water levels rise our neighbouring Pacific islands are already directly affected by climate-change displacement. Our relationship to the surrounding oceans becomes an ever- changing negotiation. Water makes up 80% of each of our bodies therefore our connection to water is undeniable. As our fresh water supplies become vulnerable to pollution our reliance on this fundamental resource is brought to the fore. These are difficult times and our connection to water becomes politicized on many levels.
