Sanderson are pleased to present the exhibition ‘Like Ice in the Clouds’, featuring a new body of work by internationally acclaimed photographer Simone Rosenabauer. ‘Like Ice in the Clouds’ comes out of a residency the artist carried out near Mt. Fuji, Japan, earlier this year. This body of work extends the thematic exploration of Rosenbauer’s preceding series ‘Like Ice in the Sunshine I (Sydney)’ and ‘II (Los Angeles)’ and continues to explore the transient nature of ice cream melting; utilizing natural light to capture the temporal interplay between past, present, and future and the idea of memory.
Departing from the bright sunlight of Sydney and Los Angeles, this new series intentionally embraces light through the clouds, weaving a softer, more ethereal quality into the collection. The wind occasionally intervened in the melting process, introducing unforeseen and enchanting idiosyncrasies with some of the works.
Despite their geographical distances, Rosenbauer’s selected locations share a near-identical latitude, emphasizing their alignment and parallel positioning of the sun on the Earth during summertime. Each ice cream subject in this new body of work was framed against a backdrop of carefully chosen hues or washi paper, a traditional Japanese paper made of fibres from the bark of the gampi tree. The artworks present impressions that draw from the rich tapestry of Japanese culture and environment.
Available in three distinct sizes (335 x 335 mm, 850 x 850 mm, and 1600 x 1600 mm) these editions invite viewers to explore the essence of impermanence, and the beauty found within fleeting moments.
Originally from Germany, Rosenbauer is currently based in Sydney, Gadigal land, Australia. She has won numerous national and international awards, including 1st prize in the International Photography Awards / IPA. Her work has been showcased in the USA, Europe, Aotearoa, Australia, Russia, Asia and Africa at galleries including Aperture Gallery (NYC), Expo Chicago, Paris Photo, Laurence Miller Gallery (NYC), AIPAD (NYC), Musée d’Elysée (Switzerland), Les Rencontre d’Arles (France), Flash Forward Festival (Canada), Art Miami (USA) and PhotoSpring Festival Beijing (China).

She studied an MA in Photography at the University of Applied Sciences, Dortmund (Germany) and in 2008 she received the European Endeavour Award from the Australian Government to study an MFA (Research) in Photography at the University of New South Wales, which she completed in 2010.
