Sanderson is pleased to announce a new exhibition of paintings by New Zealand born, New York-based artist Natasha Wright.
The show titled, “After Party” presents a snapshot of what really lies behind the scenes. The paintings often address multiple personalities and emotions within a singular figure. Wright is interested in the interior just as much as the exterior.
Groups of women gather, celebrate and commiserate. Wright clearly isn’t interested in making pretty paintings. Her larger than life women balance a complicated dichotomy of the grotesque and the beautiful. Gender, sexuality, vulnerability and power, seduction and aggression - these dualities motivate the dynamics of her work.
Geometric forms and shapes burst with metallic tones, earthy greens and warm blushes. Wright freely incorporates both abstract and figurative elements in her paintings. Her work has a playful openness, a searching quality. Forms seem to emerge intuitively.
Wright’s recent canvases are as bold as they are introspective, concerned with contemporary characters just as much as art history.
