Ponsonby
An early original gouache painting from Ted Dutch, 'Ponsonby' depicts a historical view of the well-known central Auckland suburb. Although now prized for its gentrified villas and quaint turn-of-the-century architecture, the Ponsonby of the 1960s was an area of dubious reputation, as closely clustered houses overflowing with large families jostled for elbow room on thier tightly proportioned sections. Dutch has created a work which immaculately captures the architectural essence and cultural vitality of the area at this time, preserving this view of Auckland long after the changes wrought over time have erased its identity.
