Crossing the Bar
by
John Papas
The artist’s strong links to the Hokianga Harbour played an integral role in the emotional content of this work. This is among the more abstract of the series brought together in’ Observations’, Papas creates a threatening sky and stormy sea; safe paths may be found by the intrepid, but there is no certainty of getting through unscathed . “This suite of paintings was the result of conversations with my mother, who was born at Rawene on the Hokianga Harbour. All these West Coast ports had dangerous sand bars across their mouths. So it was with a sense of dread that one crossed these bars at Hokianga and then at Onehunga.”
