Based upon observations of the visible geological activity of the Rotorua region and specifically last century’s Mt Tarawera eruption, Papas explores the subterranean elements that pose an ever-present threat to the inhabitants of New Zealand. The Volcanic Zone series of paintings deals with the power of nature, “these tremendous forces that shape and reshape the earth at will”. In Volcanic Zone the human element appears small and vulnerable in the presence of a heavy horizon line and turbulent portentious sky .
