‘Helicopter’, a painting by Auckland artist Ted Dutch, marks a very special moment in the career of this prolific artist. The work displays such a range of Dutch’s favourite creations and icons all in one setting: the vast cityscape scene, speckled with the bright panels of colour we so often see throughout his work, the figure in his flying machine and the warrior on his horse. The cartoon like horse-rider, silhouetted by the darkness behind him, stands just before where we stand, as a viewer we enter the scene from a dark point beyond the canvas which opens out on either side onto this dramatic other worldly landscape, a scene we view at the very moment our rider does. In true Ted Dutch style an astounding level of detail is achieved with the expert integration of painterly styles – from the sketchy line of the figure in the helicopter and the fading perspective of the city-scene in the background to the cartoon like precision of the warrior on his horse, 'Helicopter' is a testament to the intense concentration and time devoted to each part of this stunning piece.
